Leah Anderson is a Junior Criminology major, Political Science minor, and native of San Francisco, CA. She is a literacy coach for children, specializing in grammatical intervention for those with learning differences. She now creates cultural curriculum for organizations such as 826, Reading Partners, and San Francisco’s 100% Club. Anderson is passionate about implementing free quality education and strengthening organizations in black communities. A research fellow with Howard University’s Social Justice Consortium, she promotes free social justice courses on campus and measures the impact of scholarship funding on incarcerated students and Washington D.C. residents. Anderson also worked as a reintegration intern at the D.C. Department of Corrections. There she taught digital literacy and professional development to returning citizens as they prepared for employment. This semester, she interns for Court Appointed Social Workers D. C. where she assesses the needs of and provides resources for children survivors of sexual violence. She plans to continue working within the cross-section of education and social work. Anderson loves to travel internationally, engage in cultural exchanges, and promote the preservation of native languages amongst indigenous communities. Last summer, she traveled to Kenya and studied Swahili with Howard University’s Swahili Study Abroad (HUSSA) program. The following semester, she traveled to Northern Africa to study Arabic, migration, and religion in Tunisia. Anderson is an awardee of Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship, Benjamin Gilman Scholarship, and Robert Kantor Memorial Scholarship. She aspires to create free, international exchange programs for underserved youth around the world.
